Meeting at the Bellevue Botanical Garden
After our big February snow fiasco, I discovered that I lost a big branch of our Japanese maple which had been a house warming gift from my mother-in-law. I was really bummed about not only losing a big chunk of the tree, but also some of the shade that it created, so I will really have to think about how to protect the plants around the area this summer. I hope that everyone else came through relatively unscathed...
Our March meeting will feature a guest speaker from Canada. He is a very active fellow member of NARGS and of the Alpine Garden Club of BC. Here is a brief bio and pictures that Jay kindly shared with us!
Jay Akerley is a rock and alpine gardening enthusiast with gardens in both Greater Vancouver and high on the Thompson Plateau in British Columbia's Interior. His degree in Geography from Simon Fraser University and subsequent training at the Pacific Horticulture College in Victoria nurtured an interest in the plants and landscapes of the world's montane and high steppe biomes. Over the past 15 years, he has been collecting seed in rugged environments across Western North America, contributing to seed exchanges and the collections of specialized growers around the world. He has published over ten articles in various journals, and participated as a volunteer with the North American Rock Garden Society, Alpine Garden Club of BC and other gardening clubs. （All pictures © Jay Akerley )
